Frank Serafini presents
The Reading Workshop: A Framework for Reading Comprehension Instruction

The Reading Workshop is an organizational framework that provides a physical and social environment for reading, dialogue and response to reading. It also provides numerous opportunities for reading and comprehension instruction. Helping novice readers learn how to comprehend literature and other texts requires teachers to demonstrate what proficient readers do by making our reading processes "visible" through thinking aloud and discussing the comprehension practices we use to make sense of texts. This workshop will focus on the role of literature in the reading workshop, creating invested discussions, and the Emerging Expertise Model of reading instruction that provides demonstrations, guided practice and reflective opportunities for developing reading comprehension lessons. Practical applications, embedded in a research based theoretical framework, will be provided.
